How do you register your address in Norway in 2026?

Skatteetaten’s rule of thumb is clear: stays intended to last more than six months require a move notification to Norway (with Nordic exceptions described on the live pages). If UDI recently granted a residence permit of at least six months, UDI often notifies Folkeregisteret and Skatteetaten may register you automatically and write to you. Do not file RF-1401 in those automatic cases unless Skatteetaten tells you to. If you hold a D-nummer and will stay at least six continuous months, you normally report the move yourself. Within 30 days of the D-nummer, some files can be sent with RF-1401 and housing proof; later filings usually need a fresh ID appointment.

Bring passport, stay papers or residence card, and a lease or ownership proof. Apartment dwellers need the bruksenhetsnummer (unit number such as H0201) that identifies the flat inside the building.
