How do you register your address in the Czech Republic in 2026?

According to Czech Foreign Police guidance, a foreigner older than 15 must report presence and place of residence to the Residence Administration Unit of the Alien Police Department for the area where they stay. For most third-country nationals, the deadline is within three working days of entry.

You do not need a separate police visit if the accommodation provider already submitted your registration form. That is why a hotel check-in often covers the first days, while a privately rented flat does not.

EU citizens and their family members follow a longer clock: report within 30 days if the expected stay is longer than 30 days, unless the accommodation provider already reported you. Failing to report can lead to an administrative fine of up to CZK 3,000.

Bring your passport or national ID, visa or residence documents if you have them, and the address details of where you sleep. The Foreign Police registration form is the usual paper trail. Complete it in person at the competent Alien Police office for your address if no provider did it for you.

This arrival report is not the same as the accommodation proof later used for a long-term residence file. For residence applications, the Ministry of the Interior often wants stronger housing evidence, such as a lease or an owner's confirmation of accommodation for a building marked for habitation. If you enter to collect a long-term or permanent residence card, Interior Ministry guidance also points many people to an MOI office for biometrics and reporting linked to that process, rather than treating the hotel form as the whole story.

A clean reported address makes later steps less messy: bank onboarding questions, health insurance paperwork, and residence applications all ask where you live. It also helps you avoid an early fine that wastes time in your first week.
