How do you register your address in Austria in 2026?

City of Vienna guidance is clear: register within three days after moving in, counting from the day you actually move, not from the lease signature or key handover. You cannot register before you move in. When you leave, Abmeldung (de-registration) is due within three days before or after moving out.

In Vienna, any Meldeservicestelle (Residence Registration Service Centre) at the Magistratische Bezirksämter can take the filing. In Graz and other cities, use the municipal Meldeamt named on the city website for your postcode. Bring a completed Meldezettel form signed by you and the Unterkunftgeber (housing provider): the owner, Hausverwaltung (property management), or the Hauptmieter if you are a flatmate. Non-Austrian citizens must show a valid travel document such as a passport.

Registration itself is free. You receive a Bestätigung der Meldung (confirmation of registration). Extra copies for other authorities can carry fees; City of Vienna publishes those amounts on its registration page. Keep the confirmation with your passport. Banks, employers and permit desks ask for it constantly.

Almost every arrival step assumes you are already registered. Austrian bank onboarding usually wants the Meldebestätigung. Social insurance letters and the e-card path need a deliverable address.
