Slovak citizens register a permanent address with their municipality. Foreigners do not. Your address lives on your residence card, and the Foreign Police office that covers your new street keeps the record.
Who do you tell, and how fast?
There are two reporting moments, and they have different clocks.
- Arrival report. Non-EU citizens report where they will stay within three business days of entering Slovakia. EU citizens and their family members have ten business days. A hotel, hostel, or similar accommodation provider files this on your behalf, so a short first stay costs you no extra form.
- Change of address. A non-EU citizen who moves permanently must notify the Foreign Police and apply for a new residence card within five business days. EU citizens and family members have ten business days.
Both go to the Foreign Police department competent for the new address, so a move from Bratislava to Trnava means a different office. The new card costs EUR 10 within 30 days or EUR 39 within two working days, and slightly less when you submit electronically.
What landlord paper does the police accept?
Accommodation proof can be one of four things:
- an electronic consent from the owner or provider, submitted through the state's online service,
- a tenancy agreement with the owner, or with a user of the flat plus proof that the user may sublet,
- an affidavit from the owner or provider, again with proof of right to use the flat when the affiant is not the owner,
- a confirmation from an accommodation facility.
The document must be no older than 90 days at the time of submission. For a first residence application, the tenancy agreement or affidavit must be notarised, and every co-owner must sign. A flat with three heirs on the title means three signatures. Ask your landlord to look at the title deed before you commit. How to rent a home shows how a viewing and a lease check fit together, and Rental deposit and contract covers deposit rules.
Subletting is the main trap. A tenant who offers a room without the owner's written permission cannot give you valid proof, and the file is likely to stall. If you need a bridge, Short-term housing lists options where the provider reports for you.
Which other offices need the new address?
The police are first, but not last. Your health fund wants any address change within eight days, as explained in Choose health insurance. A Slovak driving licence exchange goes to the police documents office that covers your address, see Convert a driving licence. Also tell your employer, your bank, and your tax office if you have one.
You must also tell the Foreign Police in advance if you plan to stay more than 30 days away from your registered place of residence in Slovakia, and in writing if you will be outside the country for more than 180 days continuously.
Common misconceptions
Walking into the municipal office with a lease does not register a foreigner, because the municipal register of permanent addresses is a Slovak citizen's route. An Airbnb booking is not proof for a long-term permit unless the provider issues the facility confirmation. And the five-day clock counts business days from the move, not from when you find a free appointment, so book the slot before you pack.
Summary
Report arrival to the Foreign Police, report each move within five business days if you are non-EU, and keep a fresh, correctly signed landlord document. For first residence applications, every co-owner's notarised signature matters.
