How do you get a residence card in Norway in 2026?

UDI issues Schengen-standard residence cards to third-country nationals who hold a Norwegian residence permit. The same card format also covers third-country family members of EEA citizens who have a right of residence, and permanent residence cards for those who qualify later. The card stores biometrics (photo and fingerprints) and shows that your stay is lawful.

After a positive UDI decision, book or follow the police appointment instructions in your decision letter. Many districts require an online booking. You must appear in person for biometrics so the police can order the card. If you received the decision abroad, UDI guidance for EEA-family cards often requires reporting to the police within seven days of arrival. Replacement cards can carry a fee when you reorder after loss.

Carry the card as everyday proof of stay for employers, landlords, and travel inside Schengen rules that apply to your status.
