Slovakia's rule has a clock. It starts the day your residence is granted or registered, not the day you land, and it ends with a licence that is no longer valid on Slovak roads.
When must you exchange a foreign driving licence?
The answer depends on where the licence was issued.
- EU or EEA licence: valid in Slovakia until expiry. You may exchange after 185 days of residence, but you do not have to. If it expires while you live here, you renew it with the Slovak police.
- Other Geneva or Vienna convention country: you drive on your home licence for 185 days after residence is granted or registered. You then have 60 days to apply for a Slovak licence. After day 245 an unexchanged licence counts as invalid in Slovakia, even if it is still valid at home.
- Country outside both conventions: exchange may not be possible. Ask the police documents office first.
The clock runs on residence, so a visa-free tourist is outside the rule, but a temporary residence holder is inside it. Read How to apply for a residence permit to see when your residence actually counts.
What do you bring to the police documents office?
You apply at the documents office (oddelenie dokladov) of the district police directorate that covers your home address, not at a driving school. Older guides still mention the traffic inspectorate, so confirm the office name on the Ministry of Interior site. That is why registering your address comes first: it decides which office handles you.
For a non-EU licence, bring:
- your passport and the residence card or permit,
- the foreign licence,
- a certified Slovak translation of the licence by a court-appointed translator,
- an official confirmation from the issuing authority that the licence is yours and lists your categories,
- a certified Slovak translation of that confirmation.
Whether the confirmation needs an apostille depends on the issuing country, so ask the police or your consulate before you order translations. The officer prepares the application form, so you only check and sign. No Slovak driving school or exam is needed for a qualifying exchange. Heavy categories, such as C and D, and applicants over 70 may need a medical certificate. The new card follows the EU format and works across the EU.
What else changes once you drive in Slovakia?
A licence is only part of it. Motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette (toll sticker) bought online and tied to your number plate. Every car registered here also needs compulsory third-party liability insurance.
Commuters who live in Slovak towns near Vienna should also check Austrian rules, because Austria has its own toll system. See Living near the Austrian border. For fuel, parking, and public transport comparisons, read Transport costs.
Common misconceptions
You do not retake the test on a qualifying exchange. A foreign licence does not stay valid forever because it is valid at home. The 185 days are not counted from arrival but from the date residence was granted or registered. And an international driving permit is not a substitute for the Slovak exchange once you hold residence.
Summary
EU licence: keep it until it expires. Other convention licence: drive 185 days, then apply within 60 days at the police documents office with certified translations and issuer confirmation. Miss day 245 and you are unlicensed in Slovakia.
