Australia will use a lottery for Working Holiday year 2 and year 3
From September 2026, most backpackers need a lottery for year 2 and year 3. Places drop to about 45,000 then 5,000. Regional work still matters, but it no longer guarantees a longer stay.

Australia is changing how backpackers stay longer. On 17 September 2026, Home Affairs said most people will need a lottery (ballot) for Working Holiday year 2 and year 3. Doing the regional work still helps you enter. It does not promise another year.
This is a Country To Live news note for movers and trip planners. It is not legal advice.
New lottery for year 2 and year 3
- Year 2 is heading toward about 45,000 places a year, down from about 57,000 people who recently qualified.
- Year 3 is heading toward about 5,000 places, down from about 31,000.
- You still need regional work. Most people still need about 88 days of approved regional work for year 2, and about six months for year 3, before they can join the lottery.
- Work alone is not enough. Finishing the days only gives you a chance at a limited place.
- The lottery is not fully live yet. Home Affairs says the change will roll out over about 12 months. Until the official checklist shows the new steps, today’s extension rules may still apply. Check that page before you quit a job or buy a flight.
You still need regional work
- Approved work in the right region and job type still matters if you want to join the lottery.
- Year 1 Working Holiday visas are a separate topic. This note is about staying for year 2 or year 3.
- Not every passport has the same regional-work rules. UK free-trade settings are different for some British travelers.
- Working Holiday decisions may take about three months under the same package. Build that wait into farm and hostel plans.
Who feels this change
- Backpackers already working toward 88 days or six months who thought the work alone would buy another year.
- Hostels, farms, and pubs that hire second-year backpackers in quieter towns.
- People comparing a long Australia trip with New Zealand, Canada, or the United Kingdom.
What to check next
- Open the Australia country page and compare living costs with a shorter trip.
- Compare options with Australia vs New Zealand or Australia vs Canada if year 2 was your whole plan.
- Read the current Working Holiday checklist on the Department of Home Affairs site before you treat the new caps as live for your case.
