Soft public transport scores and island heat push many movers toward a car. Licence rules still split visitor driving from a Barbadian card. Confusing the two creates insurance and police risk on left-hand roads from Bridgetown to Holetown.
How long can you drive on a foreign licence?
You need a valid domestic or foreign driving licence to drive on public roads. Visitor Driving Permits were abolished effective 15 October 2025, so visitors no longer buy a separate local visitor permit on top of a valid foreign licence. Carry your home licence (and an International Driving Permit if it helps translation), passport, and rental paperwork. Rental desks still set their own age and card rules.
Once you settle on Welcome Stamp, a work permit, SERP, student status, or similar long-stay categories, plan the local exchange early so taxis do not rewrite your transport budget. Coast-hopping between the Gap, Holetown, and Bathsheba is easier with lawful papers: Living in Holetown. Finish Immigration first: Residence or work permit.
How does the Barbados Licensing Authority exchange work?
Eligible long-stay categories include Welcome Stamp, work permit, reside-and-work status, permanent residence, immigrant status, Special Entry permit, and certain CARICOM paths listed in local guidance. If you do not already hold a Barbados Trident ID card, apply for that identity card before the licence exchange.
Visit the Barbados Licensing Authority at The Pine, St Michael, with your foreign licence, Trident ID, and immigration evidence. Pay the licence fee at the Barbados Revenue Authority counter at The Pine: published cash fees are commonly BBD $50 for one year, $125 for three years, or $200 for five years. Return to the Licensing Authority with the receipt for your photo; cards are often produced on the spot or within a few days. Keep a local mobile number for callbacks and a bank habit for recurring costs: Open a bank account.
Common misconceptions
Assuming you still need a Visitor Driving Permit for a short holiday fails. That product was abolished in October 2025.
Assuming Welcome Stamp holders can skip Trident ID forever also fails. The exchange path usually wants the local ID card first.
Summary
Use your foreign licence as a visitor under current rules, then exchange through the Licensing Authority once you hold Welcome Stamp or other long-stay status, Trident ID, and cash for Revenue Authority fees. Keep left from day one.
