How do you apply for a residence permit in the Czech Republic in 2026?

EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens do not use the classic third-country long-term visa chain. Their practical work is registration and reporting when the stay is long enough, plus the usual housing and health setup. Family members of EU citizens can sit in a related but separate category.

Third-country nationals usually start outside Czechia with a long-term visa for a stay over 90 days, or enter another published route such as an employee card or Blue Card where they qualify. After lawful entry to collect a residence permit, Interior Ministry guidance says you must report to the designated MOI office within three working days to provide biometric data for the residence card. Miss that window and the proceedings can end, which means you may have to leave.

Extensions and changes of purpose also have strict timing. MOI pages warn applicants to file personally by the last day of validity for many long-term residence actions, with limited room for weekend or holiday timing tricks.

Expect identity documents, purpose proof (job contract, trade licence extract, school confirmation, family evidence), proof of accommodation, and health insurance that fits the route. Accommodation proof is often an original or notarised ownership extract, purchase contract, or signed owner confirmation for a building intended for habitation, not only a casual chat with a landlord.

Police certificates, translations, and fees depend on the purpose and your filing country. Use the current MOI foreigners pages and your embassy checklist on the day you file. Czech freelance or business routes also add trade-licence and tax-office steps after arrival; those are not optional extras.
