Which Russian exam certificate should you take in 2026?

TORFL, also written ТРКИ, is the state system for testing Russian as a foreign language. Authorised centres such as the Pushkin Institute and the St Petersburg State University Language Testing Centre run the ladder. Common labels map roughly to CEFR bands: elementary ТЭУ (A1), basic ТБУ (A2), first certification ТРКИ-I (B1), second ТРКИ-II (B2), third ТРКИ-III (C1), and fourth ТРКИ-IV (C2). Universities often look to ТРКИ-I or higher for degree tracks taught in Russian. Employers may ask for a named level rather than a tourist course certificate: Russian for work and International students.

Residence filings are a different product. Many RVP (temporary residence) and VNZh (permanent residence) applicants must confirm Russian language plus history and law knowledge through the migration-oriented comprehensive exam route, unless they fall in an exempt category published for their status. That package is not interchangeable with a random TORFL booking just because both test Russian: Apply for a residence permit and Get permanent residence.

Confirm the exact certificate name on the live checklist for your university, employer, or MVD category before you pay. Testing centres publish schedules, formats, and fees that change; treat any blog price list as stale until you recheck the centre page. Subtests usually cover reading, writing, vocabulary and grammar, listening, and speaking.
