Slovenian language certificates are not all equal for official filings. Tourist course attendance certificates rarely replace the Centre for Slovene state exam path.
Which exams are publicly valid?
The Centre for Slovene as a Second and Foreign Language at the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Arts administers and oversees state-recognised exams. Levels include breakthrough, basic, intermediate, and advanced, mapped to CEFR A1 through higher bands. Written and oral parts apply; results typically follow within about 30 working days. Authorised adult-education providers also run listed sessions on the Centre’s exam calendar.
The Centre states it does not partner with every private “Slovenian exam” brand you may see advertised. For residence, citizenship, and many study uses, stick to the Centre pathway named on official pages: Language requirements.
Which level should you book?
Citizenship and many permanent-residence proofs commonly point at the basic level. Some University of Ljubljana degree programmes ask for B2 intermediate proof before enrolment. Employers and regulated professions may name their own level. Prep courses and Slonline help, but the exam still needs timed practice: Learn Slovenian and How hard is Slovenian.
Common misconceptions
Assuming any private school diploma equals the state certificate fails.
Assuming one exam level covers every future purpose also fails; study and citizenship can differ.
Summary
Book the Centre for Slovene level your authority actually names, then prep for both written and oral sections. The certificate is a filing tool, not a souvenir of class attendance.
