Do you need Russian for work in Russia in 2026?

English-led pockets exist mainly in Moscow and, more narrowly, Saint Petersburg. International IT product teams, some research collaborations, shared-services centres tied to foreign headquarters, and remote roles serving overseas clients can operate in English when the whole team already works that way. Freelancers who invoice foreign clients may keep English as the client language while still needing Russian for local banking, tax identifiers, and landlord life.

Those pockets are not the default labour market. Retail, hospitality for local customers, clinics, schools, municipal contractors, most domestic sales, and ordinary office administration expect Russian. RVP (разрешение на временное проживание, temporary residence permit) often links lawful work to the region that issued the permit. That means your housing city and your job city are not fully separate decisions. VNZh (вид на жительство / ВНЖ, permanent residence) is a stronger status with a different work geography in practice, but you still confirm the live MVD (Ministry of Internal Affairs) rules for your category. Employment contracts, job descriptions, and many internal policies are written in Russian even when your manager speaks English. You are responsible for what you sign. If you cannot read the contract, get a competent translation before you accept liability for hours, termination clauses, or confidentiality terms. Spoken English at the offer stage does not rewrite the signed Russian text.

For English-bubble specialist work, strong English plus survival Russian for banking, clinics, and portals may be enough at first. For any role that serves Russian customers, manages local staff, or sits inside a domestic company, you need working Russian: meetings, email, and phone calls.
