A Spanish certificate in Mexico answers a gatekeeper question. It does not replace daily speaking ability on a rental call or in a team standup. Pick the exam your authority, university, or employer names on their checklist: Spanish language requirements.
Which certificate fits which goal?
For temporary or permanent residency, Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) does not set a general DELE or SIELE requirement. Solvency, family, or work evidence drive the file: Apply for a residence permit. Practical Spanish still helps at canje windows even without a paper: Spanish bureaucracy without Spanish.
For Mexican citizenship by naturalization, SRE runs its own Spanish language exam (brief interview, reading comprehension, and writing, scored out of six with a typical pass around five) plus a separate history and culture quiz for most adult applicants. Exemptions and age rules change who must sit the culture paper; Spanish proof still applies for many older applicants under current SRE guidance. That path is not DELE and not SIELE. Confirm live instructions on SRE before you study to the wrong brand.
For universities, mobility programmes, and some employers, DELE (Instituto Cervantes) and SIELE (pan-Hispanic exam co-founded with UNAM and others) are the usual external credentials. UNAM often names B2 SIELE or DELE for Spanish-taught courses. CEPE campuses, including Polanco in Mexico City, administer SIELE and sell preparation: Learn Spanish in Mexico. SIELE reports CEFR-aligned skill scores; DELE awards fixed levels such as A2 through C2.
How should you prepare and book?
Choose the level your checklist names, then enrol in a structured Mexican Spanish class before you sit a mock oral: How hard is Spanish and Mexican Spanish. Clinic and counter life still need phrases beyond the certificate: Spanish for work. Employers may ask for workplace Spanish that neither immigration nor a DELE diploma fully proves.
Book SIELE dates through authorised centres such as CEPE Polanco, or DELE through Cervantes exam calendars. For SRE naturalization, follow the official study guide and cita process rather than treating a B2 diploma as a substitute.
Common misconceptions
Assuming any language-school diploma equals the SRE citizenship Spanish exam fails. Gatekeepers want the named SRE sitting.
Assuming DELE or SIELE unlocks temporary residency also fails when INM never listed those papers.
Summary
Skip commercial certificates for ordinary residency, study to SRE exams when naturalisation is on your timeline, and book DELE or SIELE when a university or employer names them. Confirm the accepting list first, then study to that paper only.
