Which certificate fits which goal?
For standard Einbürgerung (naturalisation), German law looks for B1-level German. Widely used proofs include Goethe-Zertifikat B1, telc Deutsch B1, ÖSD B1, and a DTZ result at B1 across the tested skills. Higher Goethe or telc levels usually satisfy the B1 bar as well. Confirm the accepted list with your local Einbürgerungsbehörde, because practice can still vary by office.
If you finish a BAMF Integrationskurs, the language exit exam is the Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer (DTZ), scored toward A2 or B1, plus the Leben in Deutschland orientation test: Integration course. A German school-leaving certificate or a German-taught degree can replace a separate B1 exam in many cases.
For university admission to German-taught programmes, institutions often name TestDaF or DSH (and sometimes Goethe C1 or telc C1 Hochschule) rather than a citizenship B1 paper. Student path: International student community.
How should you prepare and book?
Study toward the CEFR level printed on the job ad or authority letter, then sit a recognised centre exam: Learn German in Germany. Goethe and telc run many city centres; DTZ sits inside the integration-course system. Keep all modules and result sheets; offices want full skill coverage, not a partial pass.
Employers may accept B1 or B2 for roles even when immigration law does not require a certificate yet: German for work. Do not confuse an English-speaking job with proof for naturalisation.
Common misconceptions
Assuming any online “B1 quiz” counts for citizenship fails. Authorities want named certificates or listed alternative proofs.
Assuming TestDaF is the default for naturalisation also fails. It is a higher academic exam; many citizenship files use Goethe, telc, or DTZ B1 instead.
