Do you need Czech for residence or citizenship in the Czech Republic in 2026?

Ordinary long-term residence applications focus on purpose of stay, accommodation proof, health insurance, and biometrics through the Ministry of the Interior. They do not normally impose a Czech fluency test as the day-one gate: Apply for a residence permit. Third-country nationals applying for permanent residence after the usual five-year trail, and many Blue Card holders, must generally submit proof of Czech at A2 under Government Regulation rules unless they fall under an exemption. EU and EEA citizens generally do not need that A2 certificate for permanent residence. Citizenship by naturalisation raises the bar. Adults on the ordinary path typically need Czech at B1 plus a separate exam on Czech life and institutions.
