What English level do you need to move to New Zealand in 2026?

The AEWV (Accredited Employer Work Visa) does not apply one English rule to every job. Immigration New Zealand requires English evidence when the role sits at ANZSCO (Australia and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) or NOL (National Occupation List) skill level 3, 4, or 5. From 1 June 2026, skill level 3 was added to the levels that already needed English. Roles at skill level 1 or 2 on those lists have no AEWV English requirement.

If your role needs English, you can meet it without a test through approved citizenship, work, or study history, or by sitting an approved secure test. Citizenship evidence covers Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, or the United States when you also spent at least five years working or studying in one of those countries, or in Australia or New Zealand. Degree routes use a New Zealand level 7 bachelor equivalent with at least two years of study while living in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the United States, or a level 8+ postgraduate qualification with at least one year under the same country list.

Approved tests must be taken in person at a test centre. Remote "at home" versions are not accepted. Results must usually be no more than two years old when you apply. Confirm the live Immigration New Zealand table before you book, because accepted tests and scores can change. As of the current AEWV table, the baseline often cited for skill levels 3 to 5 is an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) overall score of 4.0 or more, or an equivalent such as TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-Based Test) 31+, PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) 29+, Cambridge B2 First 142+, or OET (Occupational English Test) Grade D in all four skills.

Skilled residence routes such as the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa, Straight to Residence, and listed Work to Residence pathways ask for a higher English standard than the AEWV baseline. Principal applicants who use a test currently need an IELTS overall score of 6.5 or more, or an equivalent such as TOEFL iBT 79+, PTE Academic 58+, Cambridge B2 First 176+, or OET Grade C+ in all four skills. Partners and dependent children aged 16 or older face a lower test bar (IELTS overall 5.0 or equivalent) and, on skilled residence, may instead pay for approved English lessons in New Zealand. Principal applicants cannot use that lesson option.

From 24 August 2026, Immigration New Zealand will keep English test results valid for five years instead of two for applicants who hold a recognised occupational registration. Residence pathway design is also changing around that date, so read the exact category page for your route rather than relying on an older AEWV score.

Student visas, many partnership temporary visas, and citizenship or naturalisation steps follow different checklists. Some visas allow wider English-speaking background evidence; AEWV and skilled residence do not treat that broader background route as enough on its own.

A visa English result does not replace professional registration. Nursing, teaching, and many trades set their own communication standards above immigration minimums. Employers can also test interview English, safety instructions, and written reports even when Immigration New Zealand already accepted your score.

For day-to-day independence, aim to handle tenancy clauses, payslips, medical instructions, Civil Defence alerts, and school messages without a translator. Those tasks matter more once you are already living in Hamilton, Dunedin, or a regional town where fewer services offer language support.
