The e-FRRO portal is the compliance desk most long-stay foreigners meet after landing in India. It is not optional paperwork you can postpone until a bank appointment goes wrong.
Who must register, and when?
Foreign nationals on visas valid for more than 180 days in categories commonly including employment, student, research, medical, missionary, and project visas generally must register within 14 days of arrival. Business and some other categories can also trigger registration when continuous stay crosses published thresholds. Short tourist visits on brief visas are a different track: Apply for residence.
Registration is largely online through indianfrro.gov.in. You create a user ID with passport details, an email address, and an Indian mobile number for OTPs. In-person visits happen mainly when an officer summons you, not as the default for every clean employment file.
What documents do you usually upload?
Expect passport bio pages, visa page, entry stamp, a recent photo, and Indian address proof such as a lease, Form C from a hotel or landlord, or other accepted residence evidence. Employment cases typically add the contract, employer undertaking, and company support letters. Keep filenames clean and scans readable; portal rejections often come from blurry stamps.
Pay any portal fee online when prompted. After approval, download and store the registration certificate. Banks and PAN desks often treat it as core proof: Open a bank account and Get a PAN.
What else does e-FRRO handle?
The same portal supports many visa extensions, address updates, jurisdiction transfers, exit permits, and related services. Start extension filings weeks before expiry with employer help. Missed registration or overstay can mean fines and harder future visas.
City life in Bangalore or Mumbai can start before the certificate lands, but salary, leases, and UPI setups run smoother afterward: Work-life balance and Social life.
Common misconceptions
Assuming the visa stamp alone finishes immigration fails when your category requires FRRO.
Assuming every foreigner must visit a physical FRRO office also fails. e-FRRO is designed to be online-first for many standard cases.
Summary
If your long-stay visa triggers registration, file on e-FRRO within 14 days with passport, visa, address proof, and employer papers where required. Keep the certificate with your banking and tax file so India’s next paperwork steps do not stall.
