The plastic residence document is the visible proof of the stay the canton approved. German speakers call it the Ausländerausweis. French and Italian use permis de séjour and permesso di soggiorno. You do not collect it at a single national counter; the canton of residence runs biometrics and delivery.
What must happen before the card exists?
Complete municipal address registration where you actually live, normally within 14 days and before starting Swiss work when that rule applies. The residents' office opens the local file and routes the immigration part to the cantonal migration authority.
Finish the authorisation path that matches your nationality and purpose: Apply for a residence permit. EU/EFTA movers usually prove free-movement grounds locally. Most third-country workers need the employer-led cantonal and federal steps (and any entry visa) before treating registration as routine. The municipal receipt is not the finished card.
After approval, the canton invites you to a biometrics appointment. Bring the invitation and a valid passport or accepted identity document. Third-country L, B, and C cards carry a chip with facial image and fingerprints under Schengen rules. EU/EFTA L, B, C, and G cards are credit-card format; many cantons capture a photo and signature for the print but do not embed the same biometric chip. Fees cover processing, biometrics, and issuance; amounts differ by canton and permit type.
What do L, B, C, and G mean on the plastic?
An L permit is short-stay residence, often tied to a limited contract or period. A B permit covers a longer qualifying stay. A C permit is settlement status granted only after the residence and eligibility conditions are met; it is not the default first card. A G permit is for cross-border commuters who live abroad and work in Switzerland.
Read the actual card and decision letter for employer, work, canton, and expiry conditions. Address no longer appears on many card-format permits, so keep the municipal registration printout when landlords, insurers, or banks ask for your Swiss home. Sequence the rest of arrival admin in Paperwork after moving.
SEM states that biometric cards for third-country nationals are produced centrally by one contractor and then delivered or issued by the canton's usual means. In practice that often means registered post to your Swiss address after biometrics, as Vaud and other cantons describe for card permits. Do not travel to SEM in Bern expecting to pick up the plastic there.
How do renewals and replacements work?
Start renewal with the same cantonal migration office before the expiry date printed on the card. Bring updated employment, family, or purpose evidence the canton lists. Stored biometric data may remain usable for a limited period so you are not always re-fingerprinted for every short renewal; follow the invitation letter rather than guessing.
Report a lost or stolen card to the police and the migration office promptly, then follow the replacement process. A change of name, nationality data, or permit category usually triggers a new card. Moving to another Swiss canton can require notification and, in some cases, a new local file before the next card issue.
Banks and insurers often want to see the card plus matching address proof: Open a bank account and Choose health insurance still depend on consistent identity and residence evidence even while the card is printing.
Common misconceptions
Municipal Anmeldung is compulsory but does not equal a finished residence card. The cantonal migration office may still request biometrics, evidence, or refuse the case.
An entry visa is also not the Swiss residence card. The visa gets you in when required; the cantonal plastic proves ongoing stay and, with a passport, Schengen travel rules for the holder.
EU/EFTA credit-card permits without a chip are still official residence documents. Missing a microchip does not mean you lack a permit.
Summary
Register locally, complete the cantonal migration decision, attend biometrics, then wait for central production and local delivery of the L, B, C, or G card. Check every field against your passport before you rely on the plastic for travel, payroll, or banking.
