How do you get a permanent resident card in Canada in 2026?

IRCC's current process is that most people do not submit a paid first-card application if they provide a Canadian mailing address and photo within 180 days of becoming a permanent resident. You can give the address to a Canada Border Services Agency officer at the port of entry, or later through IRCC's online address tools or the Permanent Residence Portal when you confirm status from inside Canada.

IRCC mails the card to a Canadian address. Third-party addresses and ordinary "send it to my cousin" arrangements are restricted; rural post-office box rules are narrow. If you miss the 180-day window without providing address and photo, IRCC guidance says the automatic card request can be cancelled and you must apply formally and pay fees.

Renew or replace the card through IRCC before you need to board a flight back to Canada. Travelling with an expired card creates return problems even when your PR status still exists.
