Do you need an apostille for documents when moving to Switzerland in 2026?

Birth, marriage, divorce, custody, and sometimes police-clearance certificates are the usual triggers during family registration and residence filing: Apply for a residence permit. Municipal arrival desks can also ask for civil-status proof when they record the household: Register your address. Ask the exact Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Bern, Vaud, or other cantonal checklist for your route (EU/EFTA free movement versus a third-country authorisation), because the document set is not identical nationwide.

If the issuing country and Switzerland both apply the Hague Apostille Convention of 5 October 1961, an apostille from that country's designated authority is normally enough. Swiss representations and the Federal Chancellery explain that the apostille authenticates the signature and seal on the public document so a separate Swiss consular legalisation is not required. If the issuing country is outside the Hague system, follow the longer legalisation chain the Swiss representation names.

Swiss offices do not apostille your foreign birth certificate. The stamp belongs to the competent authority in the country that issued the paper. Conversely, when you later need a Swiss-issued extract for use abroad, the cantonal Staatskanzlei or the Federal Chancellery in Bern issues the Swiss apostille, depending on which Swiss body signed the original.

Many cantons also require an authorised translation into German, French, or Italian when the original language is not accepted. Translate the apostille together with the document when the translator or receiving desk asks for a single certified pack. Do not assume an English original is always enough in a German-speaking commune or a French-speaking one.
