Document legalisation for Iceland is issuing-country work done before you land, not a Reykjavik counter stamp. ÚTL residence and work packs repeatedly ask for legally authenticated foreign originals when the paper proves civil status, education, or clean records: Apply for a residence permit.
Which authentication path do you use?
If the issuing country is in the Hague Apostille Convention, take the original to that country’s competent apostille authority. The apostille travels with the document into your Iceland file. If the country is outside the Hague system, use chain authentication: the foreign ministry stamps first, then an Icelandic embassy confirms that stamp.
Papers already in English, Icelandic, or another Nordic language usually skip translation. Everything else needs a certified translation alongside the authenticated original. Icelandic public documents used only inside Iceland do not need apostille treatment.
When do movers actually need this?
First residence and work applications, family reunification packs, and many permanent-residence files lean on authenticated civil and education documents: Get a work permit and Renew a residence permit. School enrolment and some municipal desks may accept lighter proof, but do not assume a phone photo of a diploma will clear ÚTL: Enrol in public school.
Keep a matching name string across passport, kennitala, and translated certificates: Get a kennitala and Paperwork after moving.
Common misconceptions
Assuming every PDF printout is an “original” fails. ÚTL wants authenticated originals or confirmed copies as defined on the permit page.
Assuming Nordic English alone replaces apostille for a non-Hague civil record also fails.
Summary
Apostille or chain-authenticate foreign documents in the issuing country, add certified translations when needed, and leave Icelandic papers alone for domestic use. Build the authentication calendar before your ÚTL submission date.
