How do you register a vehicle in Sweden in 2026?

When you purchase from a private seller or dealer, the ownership transfer must be recorded with Transportstyrelsen so you become the registered owner. Do that promptly: insurance and tax duties follow the register, not the handshake date. Before the car is in traffic (påställd), arrange trafikförsäkring with a Swedish insurer. Transportstyrelsen will not treat a foreign green card as a substitute once the vehicle is Swedish-registered and in use.

If the car was avställd (taken off the road), you must ställa på it again after insurance is visible in the register. Fordonsskatt is then charged for taxable cars that are not off the road. Unpaid tax or missing trafikförsäkring can trigger användningsförbud (a ban on use) even if the engine starts fine.

Periodic kontrollbesiktning (roadworthiness inspection) remains the owner’s calendar job. Transportstyrelsen does not baby-sit reminders the way some drivers expect from other countries.

Almost every imported vehicle that needs Swedish registration starts with an application for ursprungskontroll. Transportstyrelsen checks documents (registration certificate parts, proof of ownership, and for some cases customs clearance) and charges an application fee paid up front. New EU cars can follow a lighter path, but used EU imports and almost all non-EU imports still need the origin check.

After approval, book registreringsbesiktning at an authorised inspection firm using the case number. Approval of the paperwork does not guarantee the physical car will pass. Non-EU imports often need Tullverket (Swedish Customs) clearance before Transportstyrelsen will finish the case; EU moves skip that customs step but may still need VAT handling with Skatteverket for new vehicles. Temporary use on foreign plates is tightly limited (commonly up to seven days after entry with valid foreign registration and insurance), then you need temporary Swedish registration or a booked inspection trip with day cover.

When the registration inspection is approved, Swedish plates are ordered and sent. Only then does the car become a normal Swedish registry vehicle for insurance and tax.

Trafikförsäkring is compulsory for motor vehicles in traffic under the Traffic Damage Act. The registered owner buys it; optional half or full cover is separate. Drive without it and you risk Trafikförsäkringsföreningen fees that dwarf a normal premium.

A Swedish licence or a valid foreign licence you are allowed to use is a separate question from vehicle registration. Convert or replace a foreign licence when your stay rules require it; do not assume plates alone make you legal to drive.
