Daily life in Sweden runs on e-services. Paying tax, booking a vårdcentral (primary care clinic) visit, signing a lease add-on, or collecting a package often means tapping BankID on a phone. The product is issued by participating Swedish banks, not by Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) and not as a free download for tourists.
What do you need before a bank will issue BankID?
BankID’s own guidance is blunt: issuers require a Swedish personal identity number and a customer relationship with an issuing bank. In practice that means you complete folkbokföring (population registration) with Skatteverket, receive a personnummer, then open an account at a bank that offers BankID (for example Swedbank, SEB, Handelsbanken, or Nordea). Without the number, the bank cannot complete the BankID customer checks that the service expects.
Mobile BankID is the version most newcomers use. You install the BankID app, then follow your bank’s activation flow after the bank has identified you. First-time issuance usually needs a strong in-person or bank-controlled identity check. Later renewals may use digital methods described on BankID support pages, such as reading a Swedish passport or national ID chip on a phone that supports the bank’s process. Follow the steps your own bank shows in its app or branch checklist rather than a generic YouTube shortcut.
Order matters. Many people try to open an online-only bank account that already demands Mobile BankID, then discover they have neither. Major banks still let new customers start at a branch without BankID if they bring passport, Swedish identity details, and the anti-money-laundering papers the bank lists. Once the account exists, the same bank can issue BankID. See Open bank account for that chicken-and-egg loop in more detail.
How is BankID different from a Skatteverket ID card?
Skatteverket can issue a plastic Swedish identity card after you are folkbokförd and hold a personnummer. That card proves who you are in pharmacies, shops, and banks inside Sweden, and it can include a separate form of electronic identification. BankID is still the e-ID most private and public services ask for by name. Treat the Tax Agency card as physical ID (and an alternate e-ID path where accepted). Treat BankID as the bank-issued login you will use daily on Min sida services and employer portals.
Do not confuse either document with a residence permit card from Migrationsverket. The permit card proves you may stay. It does not log you into Skatteverket or 1177.
Keep BankID personal. Only the holder may use it. If you change phones, use the bank’s transfer or re-issue flow from BankID support rather than restoring an old phone backup and hoping the app still works.
What should you do in your first weeks after the personnummer arrives?
Book a bank appointment or drop-in while you still have time during working hours, especially in Stockholm or other large cities where branches run appointment systems. Bring the documents your bank lists for newcomers. Ask explicitly to activate Mobile BankID once the account is open. Test a low-stakes login (your bank app, then Skatteverket) before you need it for a hard deadline such as a benefit claim or clinic booking.
If a service accepts Freja or another e-ID for a one-off government form, that can help before BankID is ready. It does not replace BankID for the many private services that only list BankID as an option.
Common misconceptions
BankID is not created by Skatteverket when your personnummer letter arrives. The Tax Agency registers you; your bank issues BankID.
A residence permit or samordningsnummer (coordination number) alone does not guarantee BankID. Issuers build the product around a Swedish personal identity number and their own customer checks.
The Skatteverket ID card is not “BankID on plastic.” You may need both: the card for face-to-face ID, and Mobile BankID for apps.
Summary
Get folkbokföring and a personnummer, open a Swedish bank account as a identified customer, then activate Mobile BankID through that bank’s process. Use BankID for e-services and keep the Skatteverket ID card as a separate physical identity document when you need one.
Until BankID works, expect friction on almost every Swedish login screen, so finish the bank step before you assume digital life in Sweden will just work.
