Is Daejeon a good place to live in 2026?

Daedeok Innopolis (Daejeon's research cluster) links public research, universities and technology commercialisation. Its official specialist fields include information-technology convergence, biomedicine, nanotechnology and precision machinery. Researchers, engineers, laboratory staff, founders and university households can gain more from proximity here than from a Seoul address.

Yuseong-gu, a gu (urban district), contains KAIST, much of Daedeok, university activity and established residential areas. Dunsan in Seo-gu is useful for city administration, offices, schools and central services. Around Daejeon Station, older central districts suit KTX access but create a different commute to western research campuses.

The city is less forgiving for a general English-only job search. Confirm the employer and work permission before moving. Korean is more necessary for smaller businesses, property dealings, schools and medical reception than in Seoul's most international districts.

Daejeon's single metro line connects Daejeon Station, central areas, government offices and Yuseong, but it does not reach every institute door. Research campuses can require a bus, bicycle, car or employer shuttle. Test the last part of the journey in summer heat and winter cold rather than judging from the nearest station name.

KTX (high-speed intercity rail) is a major advantage. Daejeon Station sits on the main Seoul, Dongdaegu and Busan corridor, so meetings in several Korean cities can be easier than the map suggests. That benefit disappears if your home and laboratory are both far from the station.

Housing can offer more space than central Seoul, but the Korean deposit system still controls setup cash. Jeonse is a large-deposit lease with little or no monthly rent. Wolse is monthly rent plus a deposit. Check the title register, owner, secured debt, tax issues and deposit protection before paying. An officetel (compact mixed-use studio building) may suit one researcher near transit, but building fees and legal residential use need checking.

Families should start with the school language and admissions decision. Korean schools can support long-term integration, but children entering without Korean need a specific support plan. Private hagwon (after-school academy) schedules can shape evenings and transport. International-curriculum choice is narrower than around Seoul or Songdo, so verify a place before choosing Yuseong or Dunsan.

Daejeon has university and general hospitals for broad care. If your household needs a rare paediatric or adult specialist, confirm the department and referral plan rather than assuming the KTX makes regular Seoul treatment easy. Eligible foreign residents may enter National Health Insurance Service coverage under current rules, but insurance status and hospital language support are separate checks.
