A school place and a language plan are two separate questions in South Korea. A child may be admitted near a Seoul or Busan address, then face Korean-medium mathematics, lunch routines and parent notices from the first week.
How does public-school entry work?
Start with the school tied to the Korean address or the metropolitan or provincial education office. Study in Korea, the government education portal, says foreign children may attend Korean schools and directs families to the local education office for entry qualifications. Procedures differ by school level and the child's records.
Prepare passports, proof of address, family relationship documents and complete school records. Seoul's Multicultural Education Support Center lists entry and exit records, foreigner-registration records and prior attendance or grade documents among common evidence. Records outside Korean or English may need a notarised Korean translation. The school reviews age, previous education and documents when deciding grade placement.
Ask how the school will assess Korean, literacy and subject knowledge. A language gap should not erase mathematics or science already learned. Request the placement reason, review date and route into full subject participation.
What language and daily support may be available?
Public teaching is mainly Korean. Schools or education offices may arrange Korean-language classes, visiting teachers, multicultural classes, bilingual help or an intensive newcomer programme. Provision is not identical in every district and not every child qualifies for every project.
Seoul operates a Multicultural Education Support Center and has used preliminary-school and visiting Korean programmes. Gyeonggi, which surrounds Seoul and includes areas near Songdo's Incheon border, operates its own intensive Korean entry and adaptation routes. Busan, Daejeon, Daegu and Jeju use separate education offices, so ask the named school what is running for the child's year, age and Korean level.
Parent communication can be the hidden barrier. Ask which app carries notices, who explains consent forms and how interpretation is requested for safeguarding, bullying, special educational needs or health decisions. A child should not interpret a confidential meeting about their own welfare.
Check school meals for allergies or religious restrictions in writing. Ask about after-school care, collection rules and emergency contacts. A hagwon is a private after-school academy; it may provide Korean or subject tutoring, but it does not replace the school's duty to explain placement and safety. Inspect teaching language, transport and refund terms before paying.
When is a foreign or international school relevant?
Seoul and Gyeonggi have the broadest choice of foreign and international schools, and Songdo has prominent international options. Busan, Daejeon, Daegu and Jeju have fewer choices and different curricula. Admission eligibility, available year groups, language support, fees, transport and accreditation must be checked with the exact school.
An English-medium school can preserve curriculum continuity, but it can also lengthen the commute and reduce neighbourhood Korean contact. Compare the child's age, exam pathway, expected stay and support needs rather than treating it as the automatic answer.
School admission does not create immigration status for the child or parents. Each family member still needs the appropriate South Korean status, and the Residence Card, the identity card issued after qualifying foreigner registration, is only evidence of registration.
Common misconceptions
Public-school access does not guarantee an English-speaking classroom or identical Korean support in every district. A private hagwon is also not a substitute for a documented school-language plan or safeguarding contact.
Summary
Contact the school and education office before choosing the home. Bring complete records, confirm grade placement and Korean support, and test parent communication, meals, care and safeguarding in the exact Seoul, Gyeonggi, Busan, Daejeon, Daegu or Jeju school.
