How much Korean do you need for work in South Korea in 2026?

Seoul has the deepest pool of multinational technology, finance, consulting and regional-headquarters roles. Songdo in Incheon adds international organisations, biotechnology and global-campus settings. Daejeon's KAIST and Daedeok research networks support laboratories and projects where English may be the working language.

An English-heavy job is credible when the reporting line, colleagues, documentation and customers all use English. University research can still add Korean procurement or administration. A Seoul software team can add Korean once it supports local users. Ask whether an interpreter attends management or safety meetings and whether promotion introduces Korean-speaking staff.

Local sales, human resources, operations and management require reading tone as well as content. KakaoTalk, Korea's dominant workplace messaging service, can carry quick instructions, schedule changes and group etiquette. Jondaemal, polite or honorific speech, matters when addressing clients, senior colleagues and external partners.

Manufacturing roles around Incheon, Gyeonggi, Daegu or Busan may involve Korean floor briefings, labels and emergency instructions even when an overseas engineer's project language is English. Retail, hospitality and public-facing work depend on rapid customer exchanges. Local education work requires parent and school communication beyond the classroom.

Healthcare is both language-heavy and regulated. The Korea Health Personnel Licensing Examination Institute reviews overseas qualifications for covered health professions. Its current international-graduate guidance requires valid professional evidence, translated documents and profession-specific examination steps. It also lists a TOPIK requirement for certain preliminary examination applicants, including physicians, dentists, doctors of Korean medicine and pharmacists. Check the body's page for your exact profession rather than extending one rule to nurses, therapists or every health role.

TOPIK, the Test of Proficiency in Korean and the official Korean-language exam, is administered by the National Institute for International Education. Employers and institutions may use it as evidence, but a score does not prove you can chair a Busan safety meeting, write a legal memo or calm a patient.

There is no one TOPIK level that unlocks all South Korean jobs. A research employer can hire for specialist skill with little Korean, while a local sales team may demand fluent negotiation without naming a certificate. Regulated bodies can set their own evidence and exams.

Employment permission is another file. HiKorea, the government immigration portal, publishes current status-by-status manuals. Your approved status and any workplace or activity conditions control whether you may do the job. A TOPIK or KIIP result does not itself create work permission. KIIP means the Korea Immigration and Integration Program, the government integration course and assessment route.

Collect one real week's material, with confidential data removed: meeting phrases, role titles, safety terms, client questions and document headings. Practise listening to your city's speech while producing clear Standard Korean. In Busan or Daegu, regional listening may matter on the floor even when formal documents use the national standard.
