Can you live in South Korea with English in 2026?

Seoul offers the widest English layer through multinational employers, universities, foreign schools, international clinics and the Seoul Foreign Portal. Songdo in Incheon adds international schools, research and global-business settings. In Daejeon, teams linked to KAIST, universities and Daedeok research institutes may work partly in English.

Busan has international trade, port, university and tourism services, while Jeju has tourism-facing English. Daegu has universities, medical institutions and some international employers. None of those city labels guarantees English at the neighbourhood bank, property office or clinic reception. Support often narrows faster in ordinary residential districts than in the workplace or visitor centre.

English can be enough inside a multinational team whose meetings, documents, clients and management all use it. Ask about each part. A foreign school or English-speaking research lab does not make the landlord, utility technician or local social group English-speaking.

Public offices may provide translated guidance while the controlling form or decision remains Korean. HiKorea, the government immigration portal, supports reservations and guidance. The 1345 Immigration Contact Center, the official multilingual immigration helpline, can explain immigration processes and arrange three-way interpretation with eligible public bodies, but it cannot approve a case or replace missing evidence.

Banks and mobile carriers match names across the passport, account and Residence Card, the identity card issued after qualifying foreigner registration. Romanisation, spaces and name order can cause a failed identity check even when staff speak English. Show the exact registered name instead of translating it.

A bilingual agent can introduce a Seoul or Busan lease, but the signed Korean contract controls. Use a competent bilingual reviewer for deposits, repair duties and termination terms. Large hospitals may arrange English help, yet reception, consent, pharmacy instructions and specialist follow-up can differ. The National Health Insurance Service offers dedicated foreign-language telephone channels, which does not mean every clinic does.

Korean map apps usually hold more complete local addresses and business entries than foreign map services. Translation apps help with menus, messages and photographed notices. Save the Korean text for your home, workplace and hospital because a translated place name may not match a driver's search.

Reading Hangul, the Korean writing system, lets you verify exits, buses, medicine labels and building notices. Spoken survival Korean should cover your address, numbers, food restrictions, symptoms, repairs and requests for repetition. Local social life in Daegu, Jeju or a Busan neighbourhood also becomes less dependent on the person willing to switch to English.
