Seoul is the strongest base for client meetings, professional communities, late-opening workspaces and a possible switch into local employment. It also brings higher housing pressure, crowded transport and more background noise. A home near the people you meet is more valuable than a fashionable dong (neighbourhood-level administrative area) across the city.

Busan combines a substantial city, coastal setting, subway, airport and KTX (high-speed intercity rail). It suits remote workers who still need mainland clients or port and marine contacts. Jeju offers the clearest separation from office life, but flights can be disrupted, a car may be necessary and specialist healthcare can require mainland travel.

Daejeon gives central KTX access and a focused research atmosphere around KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) and Daedeok. Songdo in Incheon suits airport-heavy travel and a planned high-rise routine, though central Seoul meetings take effort. Daegu provides metro access, Dongdaegu KTX connections and a large regional city without Seoul's professional density.

South Korea's strong country-level internet does not guarantee the exact apartment line. Ask the provider to check the unit, request a recent wired speed test and confirm mobile signal indoors. A goshiwon (very small furnished room) can be a short landing option, but thin walls, shared facilities and limited desk space can make calls difficult. An officetel (compact mixed-use studio building) often gives more privacy, though management fees and legal residential use need checking.

Housing may use jeonse (a large-deposit lease with little or no monthly rent) or wolse (monthly rent plus a deposit). Remote workers still need title, owner, debt, tax and deposit-protection checks. Do not transfer a large deposit because a video tour and fast connection look convincing.

Qualifying longer-stay residents complete foreigner registration and receive a Residence Card, the identity card used for local administration. Seoul offers the deepest specialist care and professional network. Busan and Daegu have major hospitals; Daejeon is strong for a smaller inland city; Songdo can require travel elsewhere in Incheon or Seoul for a particular specialist. Jeju has the clearest referral risk.
