Is Daegu a good place to live in 2026?

Manufacturing and engineering households can connect to machinery, metalworking, automotive components and robotics in Daegu and the wider Gyeongbuk region. The city also retains a serious textile and fashion supply chain. Its medical strategy covers devices, research and health services, while universities and hospitals support education and clinical work.

These strengths reward a confirmed local employer. English may work in a university laboratory, international business team or selected medical role, but Korean matters for most domestic employers and daily administration. A partner expecting a broad English-only job search should investigate before the household commits.

Suseong-gu, a gu (urban district), is often considered for schools, residential towers and established services. Jung-gu provides central-city access, while Dong-gu can suit Dongdaegu Station, airport and eastern employment. Dalseo-gu and the Seongseo industrial side may be more practical for western workplaces. The correct choice follows the work gate, not a citywide reputation.

Daegu's metro and buses cover major corridors, but an industrial workplace outside the rail network may require a car or company bus. Test the final connection at shift times. A central apartment is not useful if the factory gate or laboratory sits beyond a slow transfer.

Dongdaegu is a key KTX stop. KTX means high-speed intercity rail, and it links Daegu with Seoul, Daejeon and Busan on the main corridor. This is valuable for client meetings and family trips. It does not turn a daily Seoul commute into a sensible plan.

Daegu rentals commonly use jeonse (a large-deposit lease with little or no monthly rent) or wolse (monthly rent plus a deposit). More space than central Seoul does not remove deposit risk. Verify the property title, owner identity, secured debt, tax issues and deposit-protection options before sending money.

Apartments can simplify heating, cooling and building management, but compare management charges, lift reliability, parking and school-road safety. An older low-rise home needs closer checks for insulation, mould, plumbing and whether air conditioning serves every sleeping room.

Daegu's basin setting can trap summer heat. Reliable cooling, external shade, window direction and the walk from metro to home affect daily comfort. Winters are cold and can feel dry, so heating and window seals matter too. AirKorea provides official current air readings; one clear viewing day is not evidence for the full year.

Families should confirm the teaching language, admissions route and commute before focusing on Suseong. Korean-school integration can work with suitable language support, while hagwon (private after-school academy) schedules may add evening travel. International-school choice is thinner than in the Seoul region or Songdo.

Daegu has major hospitals and university medicine, yet a specific paediatric, mental-health or rare-disease need requires department-level confirmation. Map urgent care and the relevant specialist from the proposed home, not simply the nearest hospital name.
