Is Jeju a good place to live in 2026?

Jeju City is the practical default for Jeju International Airport, provincial administration, denser healthcare, universities, commerce and the widest bus network. It suits tourism management, aviation, public services and many remote workers who travel to the mainland. Airport convenience can bring aircraft noise, traffic and seasonal visitor pressure, so inspect the exact street at different times.

Seogwipo gives access to the southern coast, resort and hospitality work, agriculture and a quieter urban scale. It can suit someone whose clients or employer are on the south side. Repeated trips to Jeju City, the airport or a northern hospital can make the island feel much larger than its map.

Tourism and services are prominent, with agriculture and renewable-energy projects adding specialist work. Remote work is viable only when your employer, Korean immigration status and tax setup allow it. Seasonal turnover can affect rentals, social groups and service hours in visitor-heavy areas.

Jeju has buses but no metro or intercity rail. A central Jeju City address can support a bus-based routine when work, shops and healthcare share a corridor. Rural coasts, inland villages and many Seogwipo routines become much easier with a car. Test evening, weekend and bad-weather services before renting.

Island housing ranges from city apartments to low-rise homes and rural properties. Jeonse is a large-deposit lease with little or no monthly rent; wolse is monthly rent plus a deposit. Verify title, owner, registered debt, tax issues and deposit protection before payment. For detached or exposed homes, add damp, roof, drainage, water pressure, salt corrosion, heating and road access checks.

Fast national internet scores do not prove one Jeju house has a good fixed line. Ask for the service address check and a recent speed test. Keep mobile backup, but confirm indoor signal because stone walls, terrain and remote locations can weaken it.

Families should confirm the actual school place and teaching language before choosing a coast. Jeju has Korean schools and some international education options, but eligibility, curriculum, fees and daily transport are separate decisions. A long school bus route can remove the quieter-life benefit.

Jeju City and Seogwipo cover ordinary medical needs, but a rare specialist, complex surgery or continuing paediatric service may require a mainland referral. Check the exact department and flight plan. National Health Insurance Service coverage for eligible foreign residents does not create a specialist who is absent locally.

Wind, heavy rain and typhoons affect flights, ferries, roads and exposed buildings. Jeju's official disaster service publishes response stages, while the Korea Meteorological Administration tracks typhoons. Inspect drainage, shutters, backup power and access roads. Do not rely on a landlord's claim that the last storm caused no problem.
