Iceland splits stay rights and work rights. EEA and EFTA citizens generally work without a third-country work permit. Most other nationals need a temporary work permit tied to one employer, usually packed with a residence permit on a named route such as expert knowledge or labour shortage: Apply for a residence permit.
How does the application move?
The employer usually leads when you do not yet hold a residence permit. If you already have a residence permit, employee and employer share responsibility for the work-permit filing and extensions. Submit to ÚTL; Labour processes and issues the permit. Temporary categories include expert knowledge, shortage of labour, athletes, special circumstances, family reunification, and specialised service-contract staff.
Expert tracks typically need a signed contract, union confirmation that terms match collective agreements, diplomas or experience evidence, and employer proof that local or EEA candidates were not available. Authenticate foreign education papers early: Apostille documents.
What happens after approval?
Do not start work until the permit is granted. The card names both you and the employer, so a job change needs a new filing. Extensions should be lodged at least four weeks before expiry through the same ÚTL channel, often beside residence renewal. Once you hold kennitala and domicile, bank and tax lines follow: Get a kennitala, Open a bank account, and File taxes.
Workplace Icelandic still matters for many teams even when English carries the interview: Icelandic for work. Keep the wider arrival stack in view: Paperwork after moving.
Common misconceptions
Assuming a tourist entry plus a handshake job is enough fails for non-EEA workers.
Assuming one work permit lets you freestyle across employers also fails. The permit is employer-specific.
Summary
File the work permit through ÚTL with a compliant signed contract, wait for Labour approval before starting, and renew early with the same employer package. Treat residence and work as paired calendars, not separate hobbies.
