How do you get a Turkish tax number in 2026?

The Turkish number a new arrival often needs first is an administrative identifier, not proof that they owe tax. The official online service calls it a potansiyel vergi kimlik numarası (potential tax identification number) and issues it through the Revenue Administration.

How does the online application work?

Open Dijital Vergi Dairesi (the Digital Tax Office) and use “Potential Tax Number Application for Foreigners.” Do not rely on old instructions that send you only to the retired Interactive Tax Office wording or to a paid agent's form.

Enter your name, surname, sex, birthplace, parents' names, country, passport number, mobile number and Turkish address as the current form requests. If the portal requests a passport image or another upload during your session, use a clear image of the identity page and follow its current size and format rules. Match transliteration, spacing and passport number exactly; a small difference can create trouble when a bank or land registry searches the record.

Download or print the result and store its verification details. The Revenue Administration is Gelir İdaresi Başkanlığı, or GİB (the national tax authority), so check that the website is on gib.gov.tr before entering passport data.

What if the portal does not issue the number?

Take the original passport and a copy to a vergi dairesi (tax office). Bring the Turkish address and contact details used in your other records, plus the failed application reference or old tax document if one exists. Ask the office to search by passport and identity details before creating anything new.

Once Türkiye assigns a foreigner identity number through the residence system, public and private services may use that number in place of the earlier tax identifier. Do not assume both records merged correctly. If a bank, utility company or title office sees different names or two tax records, ask GİB to correct or link the official record; never solve it by submitting a third application.

What can you use the number for?

A bank may request it during customer checks. The land registry uses tax identification in property work, and utilities or official fee payments can also require it. Each transaction has its own documents: the number does not replace a passport, lawful entry evidence, address proof, bank source-of-funds review or residence permit.

Payroll registration and opening a business are separate tax processes. An employer may need to register employment and withholding records. A sole trader or company needs the correct taxpayer registration, activity and filing setup rather than only a potential number.

Likewise, obtaining the number does not by itself make you tax resident in Türkiye. Tax residence and liability depend on the tax rules, time and home facts, income source, applicable treaty and the tax period. Get qualified advice if you work across borders, rent property or run a business.

Common misconceptions

Paying someone for a “fast tax number” does not improve the official route. The Digital Tax Office application is direct, and a tax office can resolve a genuine identity mismatch.

The number is not a residence document. It cannot make a restricted mahalle (neighbourhood) eligible, validate a lease or guarantee a bank account.

Summary

Use the Digital Tax Office with passport data copied exactly, or visit a tax office when the online check fails. Keep one clean record, reconcile it with a later foreigner identity number, and share passport files only through GİB or a verified institution that needs them.
