Malaysian tax admin runs through Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN) and the MyTax portal. Your Tax Identification Number is the file key for e-Filing, employer EA forms and many refunds. Expatriates usually create it on purpose; they do not inherit a MyKad-linked TIN.
How do foreigners register?
LHDN directs individual TIN applications through online e-Daftar on MyTax. Choose the non-citizen or foreign individual path, enter passport details, and upload a clear passport biodata page plus residence evidence such as your Employment Pass, other long-stay pass, or stamped tenancy. Business operators add SSM or partnership papers when those apply. Keep a Malaysian mobile number ready for verification SMS: Get a mobile phone.
Search MyTax first in case a prior assignment already exists. After approval, complete first-time login steps LHDN publishes (including e-CP55D when you lack a digital certificate). Branch counters can help if uploads fail, but online is the default since LHDN moved individual registration to e-Daftar.
When do you actually need the TIN?
Employees earning Malaysian-source salary usually need the number so payroll can withhold and so you can e-File when chargeable income crosses LHDN’s published thresholds. Freelancers, rental landlords and side-income earners should register even sooner. Your employer’s HR pack after Employment Pass endorsement often asks for the TIN beside bank details: Open a bank account.
Keep the TIN with your paperwork sequence and i-Kad. Filing deadlines and reliefs change; confirm the live LHDN calendar each year rather than copying a friend’s April date.
Common misconceptions
Assuming MyKad automatic TIN rules cover Employment Pass holders fails. Foreign individuals still use passport-based e-Daftar.
Assuming a foreign tax ID replaces the Malaysian TIN for local e-Filing also fails. LHDN keys Malaysian returns to its own number.
Summary
Register on MyTax e-Daftar with passport and Malaysian residence proof, activate login, and give the TIN to payroll before the first full tax year closes. Treat LHDN registration as part of the post-arrival stack, not as an optional April surprise.
