Türkiye has no single newcomer pack accepted by every bank. A branch must identify you and understand the account's purpose, then its own policy decides whether a non-resident, new permit holder or foreign worker fits the product.
What should you take to the bank?
Bring the original passport, a potansiyel vergi kimlik numarası (potential tax identification number) or Turkish foreigner identity number, and proof of your Turkish address. İşbank, for example, lists a recent Turkish electricity, water, gas or phone bill as address evidence. A signed lease can help, but the bank may want an official address record or utility document.
Also take your entry stamp, visa, residence card or work status evidence that applies to you, plus a Turkish mobile number. Be ready to state occupation, employer, expected account use, tax-residence countries and where incoming funds came from. A contract, payslip, foreign bank statement or sale record can support that explanation.
MASAK (the Financial Crimes Investigation Board) sets customer-identification and anti-money-laundering duties. These checks explain why a branch may ask for more than another branch or refuse an application it cannot verify. Remote onboarding exists for eligible foreign customers at some banks, but passport technology, identity-system access and product rules can still send a newcomer to a branch.
Which account features should you compare?
Ask for a TRY (Turkish lira) current account for local rent, salary and bills. If you receive or hold another currency, ask separately about euro, US-dollar or other foreign-currency accounts, conversion spreads and incoming transfer charges.
The bank assigns an IBAN (international bank account number used for transfers). Confirm whether the package includes a debit card, mobile and internet banking, English support, cash access, recurring bill payments and international transfers. Credit cards, overdrafts and loans require separate approval.
Compare account, card, cash, transfer and foreign-exchange fees on each bank's current tariff. Deposit insurance limits can change, and not every investment or payment product is an insured deposit. Check the present protection and the licensed institution before moving savings.
What tax and maintenance checks follow?
Banks collect foreign tax-residence declarations. A US person may receive FATCA (the United States Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act reporting form). Other cross-border customers may receive CRS (the Common Reporting Standard form used for international tax-account reporting). Answer with the real countries and tax numbers; these declarations do not decide Turkish residence permission.
Update the bank after a passport renewal, new residence card, address move, phone change or tax-residence change. If names differ across the passport, tax record and adres kayıt sistemi (official address register), fix the source record instead of asking staff to invent a spelling.
Protect the first transfer. Activate the app on your own phone, type the official bank address yourself and never give a landlord or “account fixer” a one-time password. A genuine source-of-funds question is handled by the bank, not by moving money to a caller's “safe account.”
Common misconceptions
A valid permit does not create a universal right to a standard Turkish account. A visitor without a permit is not universally barred either; acceptance depends on law, bank policy, branch verification and the product.
A Turkish bank account also does not strengthen a weak residence-permit purpose. Göç İdaresi (the Presidency of Migration Management) decides residence separately.
Summary
Take consistent passport, number, address, phone, status and funds records to more than one suitable branch if needed. Compare TRY and foreign-currency access, fees, cards and reporting duties, then keep the bank updated as your Turkish documents change.
