Almost every serious Brazilian transaction asks for a CPF before it asks for your favourite neighbourhood. Treat the number as infrastructure, not as optional bureaucracy.
What is a CPF, and who needs one?
The CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) is the individual registry number issued by Receita Federal, Brazil’s federal tax authority. It identifies you across banks, tax systems, property records, and many digital services. Landlords, fibre providers, mobile carriers, and employers routinely refuse files that lack it.
You can obtain a CPF as a foreigner without first holding a CRNM, which is why many movers start the CPF before or right after arrival. The CPF still does not grant the right to work or reside; immigration stays separate: Residence or work permit.
How do you apply?
Abroad, book a Brazilian consulate or embassy appointment through the mission’s e-consular channel and request CPF registration with your passport and the post’s supporting list. Many posts issue the number at the end of the appointment.
In Brazil, use Receita Federal’s online CPF registration when available, or attend an authorised channel such as a Receita Federal office, Banco do Brasil, Caixa Econômica Federal, Correios, or a cartório that offers the service. Bring your passport and complete identity details exactly as printed. Keep the CPF receipt and number in a password manager; you will type it constantly.
After Federal Police registration, your CPF and immigration record often become linked in practice. Keep the CPF status “regular” with Receita Federal; a blocked or pending CPF can stall banking and contracts even when your visa sticker looks fine.
What does the CPF unlock next?
A CPF is the usual key to opening a Brazilian bank account and registering Pix keys: Open a bank account. Leases, utility setup, DETRAN licence conversion files, and many health-plan quotes also ask for it: Convert a driving licence and Enrol in public health. Retirees transferring pension income still need the number for banking rails: Retiring in Brazil.
Common misconceptions
“CPF equals residence status” confuses a tax ID with a CRNM. You can hold a CPF and still be out of immigration status.
Assuming one WhatsApp screenshot of the number is enough also fails. Banks want the number to validate against Receita Federal databases.
Summary
Get a CPF early through a consulate, Receita Federal online, or an authorised in-country desk, then guard the 11-digit number like a primary ID.
Use it to unlock banking, leases, and Pix, while you finish Federal Police residence registration on its own track.
