Berlin has Germany's widest international professional network, start-up events, specialist communities, and coworking choice. It is best when meeting collaborators or changing jobs matters, but housing can consume time and money.
Leipzig offers more space, lakes, arts, a growing technology and logistics base, and fast intercity rail to Berlin. German is more important in ordinary local life.
Cologne has an open social culture, media work, central rail connections, and access to Düsseldorf and the wider Rhine-Ruhr region. Hamburg provides international business, media, logistics, water, and strong urban services, with wetter and windier weather.
Nuremberg and nearby Erlangen suit focused work, research links, and a smaller urban scale. Freiburg offers cycling, mild southwest weather, and Black Forest access, but housing pressure weakens its value case.
What must you settle before moving?
Germany has no general digital-nomad visa. Citizens who need residence permission must use a route that actually permits their work, such as qualifying employment or self-employment. A foreign employer may face German payroll, tax, labour, and social-insurance duties when you work permanently from Germany.
European cross-border workers also need their employer to check which country's social security rules apply. Do not treat an employer's informal approval as legal clearance.
After moving into a long-term home, Anmeldung, the compulsory address registration, requires the landlord's move-in confirmation. That address affects tax, banking, healthcare, and residence processes.
How should you check internet and daily fit?
Use Germany's official Broadband Atlas to inspect fixed and mobile coverage near the address. Then ask providers to check the exact building and unit, because one street can contain fibre, cable, older copper lines, and installation delays.
Request a recent speed test from the current resident if possible. Keep a mobile backup and identify a nearby coworking space before signing.
Test rail access, late transport, noise during call hours, summer heat in the room, and whether the lease permits normal home-office use.
Common misconceptions
A fast citywide internet score does not guarantee service in an older building.
Calling yourself a digital nomad does not remove German work-permission, tax, insurance, registration, or employer obligations.
