How much Vietnamese do you need for work in Vietnam in 2026?

English-led openings are most plausible in multinational companies, technology teams, universities, international schools, research groups, regional finance, foreign law or consulting practices, and tourism businesses serving international guests. Ho Chi Minh City has the broadest commercial range; Hanoi adds universities, embassies, development organisations, and headquarters; Da Nang has a smaller technology and hospitality market.

Read the actual job advertisement and interview process. If a Vietnam posting says Vietnamese is preferred, ask which tasks trigger it: customer calls, local reports, staff supervision, supplier bargaining, or government contact. A role advertised in English can still have a Vietnamese operating layer.

Local sales, retail, hospitality, operations, and management depend on fast relationship-based speech. Manufacturing roles around the expanded Ho Chi Minh City area, northern industrial provinces, Hai Phong, or Da Nang can require Vietnamese for shift handovers, safety instructions, maintenance, and supplier work even when regional leaders use English.

Healthcare, local education, and other regulated professions raise two separate issues. You need enough Vietnamese for patients, pupils, records, and safe practice, while the responsible authority may also require recognition of your foreign qualification or a Vietnamese licence. Language ability does not replace recognition, and recognition does not prove that you can communicate safely.

Government-facing, compliance, tax, customs, and employment work often requires reading Vietnamese documents or using a qualified translator. Do not sign a Vietnamese employment contract, policy, or settlement because an English summary looks familiar. Confirm which language version controls and obtain independent translation for material terms.

Begin with xưng hô (Vietnam's relationship-based system of address and pronouns). How colleagues address an older manager, a younger direct report, or a client carries information about hierarchy and rapport. Learn the forms your own team uses, then add meeting dates, deadlines, quantities, safety words, and ways to disagree or ask for clarification.

Northern and southern workplace speech differ in pronunciation and some everyday vocabulary. A Hanoi course helps with northern colleagues and formal listening; a Ho Chi Minh City tutor may better match a southern sales or operations team. Keep one clear speaking model, but train your ear across both if the company spans Vietnam.

The work permit is the government's permission for an eligible foreigner to take a specified job. Under Decree 219, in force since August 2025, the file focuses on the employer's need, job category, qualifications, experience, and supporting documents. It does not create a universal Vietnamese-language test. Provincial-level People's Committees are the current issuing authorities, replacing the older labour-department structure.
