How much English do you need for work in the United Kingdom in 2026?

London holds the deepest pool of multinational finance, technology, media, and professional-services teams that run projects in English. An English-only role is most credible when the whole reporting line and customer base use English. One international manager does not make the surrounding company English-only. Skilled Worker and other Home Office work routes set their own English evidence rules. Those visa tests are separate from what a hiring manager expects in interviews and on the job. For the immigration table, use English language requirements rather than treating IELTS as a universal work card.

Public-facing retail, hospitality, reception, call centres, and many local small businesses need clear spoken English with customers. National Health Service (NHS) clinical and many care roles add patient safety, handover notes, and regulated professional standards.
