Can children start school in Portugal without speaking Portuguese in 2026?

After you have a Portuguese address for catchment priority, complete address registration and enrol through Portal das Matrículas or the local agrupamento (school grouping). Maths, history, science, and playground talk arrive in European Portuguese from the first week. Parent emails, consent forms, and school portals usually stay Portuguese even when a teacher can speak some English in Lisbon or Porto.

That immersion is why many long-stay families choose the public track. Friendships form in Portuguese, and later secondary options assume the national curriculum language. Ask the school how reports will be explained to you so the child is not translating sensitive meetings alone: expat families community.

Português Língua Não Materna (PLNM), Portuguese as a non-native language, is the Ministry of Education support subject for newly arrived pupils whose mother tongue or prior schooling language is not Portuguese. Gov.pt states the offer runs from the first cycle of basic education through secondary school. The school identifies candidates at enrolment, then runs a language placement test. Results map to beginner (A1/A2), intermediate (B1), or advanced (B2/C1) bands under the Common European Framework.

Directorate-General for Education guidance says pupils at zero, A1, A2, or B1 can receive PLNM lessons instead of the mainstream Portuguese subject when the school can form a group, often about ten students. If numbers are lower, PLNM may run inside Portuguese lesson time with extra support. Advanced pupils follow national Portuguese with possible language help and dictionary use in other subjects. Provision is a school-organised response, not a private tutor paid by the state. Ask for the placement result, weekly hours, and exit criteria in writing.

English-medium campuses make sense for a short posting or when the family already follows a British, American, or IB path. Along the Lisbon–Cascais corridor and in Porto, annual fees often sit in five-figure euro bands before registration and capital levies: compare international school costs. That trade buys English classrooms and parent communication, not a free substitute for catchment enrolment.

For a multi-year stay, many families still pick public immersion plus PLNM so Portuguese grows for friendships and later exams. Neighbourhood choice then matters more than campus branding: best places for families. Adult English comfort in cafés does not rewrite the school language default: English in Portugal.
