Where are the biggest expat communities in South Korea in 2026?

Seoul combines corporate headquarters, diplomacy, universities, research hospitals, foreign schools, chambers and multiple Seoul Foreign Resident Centers. The network is deep but geographically fragmented. A job in Yeouido, an embassy role near central Seoul and a school in a southern suburb point toward different rail and road corridors, so a famous international neighbourhood does not solve every commute.

Incheon has two different anchors. The airport and nearby logistics work pull households toward Yeongjong, while Songdo links biotech, overseas university campuses and international institutions. IFEZ (Incheon Free Economic Zone) is the public authority overseeing Songdo and other designated Incheon business areas. A Songdo home can serve a biotech or campus routine well, yet a daily trip to central Seoul can make that same address poor for another household.

Pyeongtaek has a US military-connected ecosystem around Camp Humphreys, with housing and businesses shaped by eligible service members, civilian employees, contractors and families. It is not a general American district. Base services and entry are restricted, and people without the relevant military connection use ordinary Korean services and immigration rules.

Busan's port, shipping, marine industries, universities, airport and Busan Global City Foundation support a year-round resident network. Daejeon centres on KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), Daedeok research organisations and international students, backed by the Daejeon Support Center for Foreign Residents. These cities can be professionally deep even when their general English-language event range is smaller than Seoul's.

Daegu combines regional manufacturing, medical and university networks with US military-connected activity around Camps Walker, Henry and George. Jeju brings tourism, education and family routes together across Jeju City and Seogwipo. The island works best when income, school and healthcare are already secure because a missing specialist or employer alternative can require a flight rather than a train.

Map the actual employer, school gate, hospital, rail station and airport route before comparing city labels. In Seoul, crossing the metropolitan region can consume the evening. Around Pyeongtaek, distance from a Camp Humphreys gate matters only if you have authorised access. In Busan, a port-side job and a Haeundae school routine can pull in opposite directions.

Community access never creates legal status. A lease near a base, admission to a foreign school, employment lead or chamber membership does not grant residence or work permission.
