Americans do not share one South Korean enclave or legal category. Corporate staff, diplomats, teachers, researchers, students and mixed-nationality families normally use Korean immigration status, while eligible military-connected people follow a separate framework. "Expat" is the search term; Korean agencies usually place these residents inside broader foreign-resident services.
Where do civilian American networks form?
Seoul has the widest civilian range through multinational employers, the US Embassy, universities, foreign schools, professional services and AMCHAM Korea (American Chamber of Commerce in Korea, a business association). Jongno and central Seoul suit some diplomatic and public-affairs routes; Yeouido suits some finance and corporate work; Yongsan can offer central rail access and international amenities. No one district serves every American household.
Itaewon remains a social and commercial area in Yongsan, but it should not be treated as the centre of all current US military activity. A civilian working near Gangnam or a child attending a school outside central Seoul may gain little from living there. The US Embassy provides citizen services, not housing placement or a general expat club.
Incheon and Songdo suit airport, logistics, biotech, international institution and overseas-campus work. IFEZ (Incheon Free Economic Zone) is the public authority overseeing Songdo and other designated Incheon business areas. Busan supports maritime, port, education and regional business networks. Daejeon can fit Americans attached to KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), Daedeok research or university work, but its American-specific institutions are thinner than Seoul's.
How do Pyeongtaek and Daegu differ?
Pyeongtaek's American-linked ecosystem follows Camp Humphreys and nearby assignments. USFK (United States Forces Korea) is the US command supporting US forces in Korea. SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement, the framework governing eligible US military-connected people in Korea) defines the status of covered personnel and dependants. It is not a residence option that an American can choose simply by moving near a base.
Daegu has military-connected life around Camps Walker, Henry and George, with Camp Carroll in nearby Waegwan and regional support extending south. Daegu also has Korean universities, healthcare and industry unrelated to the bases. A US contractor, a Korean-company employee and a teacher living on the same street may have different entry documents, healthcare access and work permissions.
Base entry and military services are restricted to authorised users and approved visitors. A lease near Camp Humphreys or Camp Walker does not provide gate access. Ordinary American residents must plan around Korean clinics, schools, transport and immigration processes unless their documented status gives access to a military service.
What should decide the address?
Map the workplace or installation gate, school, healthcare, rail station and airport route before signing a lease. Pyeongtaek can simplify a Camp Humphreys assignment but complicate frequent central Seoul work. In Daegu, the exact installation matters. In Songdo, a local biotech commute can be easy while regular central Seoul meetings remain costly in time.
AMCHAM Korea and other professional groups can open business contacts across nationalities. They do not sponsor every member, grant work rights or identify an American neighbourhood. Likewise, a foreign-school place does not create immigration status. Civilians should use HiKorea, the government's immigration portal, and the 1345 Immigration Contact Center, the official multilingual immigration helpline, for Korean status questions.
Common misconceptions
Not every American near a South Korean base is military-connected, and not every military-connected household can use every installation service. Seoul's American life also did not disappear when major command functions moved south. Corporate, diplomatic, university and school networks remain spread across the capital region.
Summary
Seoul is the broadest civilian American hub. Pyeongtaek and Daegu are important for eligible military-connected households, while Busan, Songdo and Daejeon work for specific industries or institutions. Choose around documented status, actual access, school and healthcare needs, and the gate or office you must reach.
