Where are the biggest expat communities in Taiwan in 2026?

Greater Taipei, meaning Taipei City plus the New Taipei suburbs around it, is the clear number one. Da'an concentrates young professionals and cafes, Xinyi holds the corporate crowd near Taipei 101, Gongguan skews student, and Tianmu in the north is the long-running family belt near international schools: living in Taipei and where to live in Taiwan. New Taipei districts such as Banqiao and Xindian add commuter foreigners who work in the core but pay less rent.

This is where nearly every formal channel lives: InterNations, the Gold Card scene, and chamber events all center on Taipei, which makes it the easiest place to find people fast: expat community and best expat groups.

Hsinchu is the specialist hub. The Science Park pulls semiconductor and hardware engineers into a concentrated tech bubble, so its foreigner scene is real but narrow and career-shaped. Taichung sits in the mid tier: a car-friendly, more affordable central city with a steady but smaller mixed community of teachers, professionals, and families.

Kaohsiung, the southern harbor city, is warmer and cheaper but noticeably thinner for foreigners, leaning toward teachers and long-stay lifestyle movers. Tainan is niche, drawing culture-minded and student-linked foreigners rather than a large professional crowd. A rough professional-density order is Taipei well ahead, then Hsinchu and Taichung, then Kaohsiung, then Tainan.

Pick Greater Taipei if you want the deepest career network, the most events, and the fastest social start, and accept higher Taipei cost of living and rent. Pick Hsinchu if your work is in chips and you want colleagues nearby. Pick Taichung or Kaohsiung for lower costs and a slower pace, knowing you will do more of the introductions yourself.

Density has trade-offs. Taipei's scene can feel transient as teachers and students cycle out, while a southern city can feel quiet but produce steadier, longer friendships once you land them: making friends.
