How do you apply for a residence permit in Denmark in 2026?

Nordic citizens from Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden may live, study, and work in Denmark without an EU residence document. They still register address and CPR at Borgerservice or ICS when they settle. Other EU/EEA and Swiss citizens can enter and begin work or study on arrival under EU rules, but Life in Denmark says you must apply for an EU residence document within three months if you plan to stay longer (within six months if you are job seeking). You appear in person at a SIRI branch or an International Citizen Service centre after the online application, usually within the booking window SIRI states on the form pages.

Create a case order ID, pay the processing fee, and submit the application form for that exact scheme (work applications often use forms such as AR1 on the How to apply tab). Attach passport copies, the employment contract or admission letter, and any authorisation receipts the occupation requires. If you apply from abroad, follow embassy or biometric instructions on the same pages. If you apply inside Denmark, you must already be here legally. A granted residence and work permit proves you may stay and work. It is not a CPR number, not MitID, and not a yellow health card. After arrival, register your address, open MitID, arrange a bank account, and complete public healthcare enrolment.
