South Africa separates short visitor entry from purpose-tied temporary residence. A visa exemption or visitor stamp for tourism does not authorise local employment or a multi-year move. The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) decides temporary residence. VFS Global runs many of the appointment desks and document intakes inside the country and at some foreign centres.
Which temporary residence category fits?
Work routes dominate for hired movers. A Critical Skills work visa targets occupations on the latest Critical Skills List published by Home Affairs. You still need a real South African job offer from an employer in good standing, plus proof you match one listed skill. Expect a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation of foreign degrees (or proof the SAQA file is lodged), and written confirmation from a relevant professional body or board where the law requires registration. Critical Skills visas can run up to five years when documents are complete; incomplete SAQA outcomes may produce a shorter first grant until the positive evaluation arrives.
General work, intra-company transfer, corporate, and business visas each have their own checklists. Study visas need acceptance from a registered institution. Relative and spousal or life-partner routes need relationship evidence and, where required, financial assurance from the South African citizen or permanent-resident sponsor. The retired person’s visa is for people who can show a pension, irrevocable annuity, or net-worth path that meets the Gazette-published monthly threshold on the live VFS checklist. None of these categories are interchangeable: pick the purpose that matches how you will actually live.
How do you lodge and renew?
Most temporary residence applications use form DHA-1738 (also seen historically as BI-1738). Shared core items usually include a passport valid for at least 30 days beyond the intended stay, medical report, radiological (chest X-ray) report, police clearances from countries where you lived for 12 months or more after age 18, photographs, and proof of the prescribed DHA and VFS fees. Category annexes then add contracts, SAQA letters, marriage certificates, or pension statements.
First-time long-stay filings are commonly made from outside South Africa at a mission or VFS centre serving your place of residence. People already on valid temporary status can often extend or change conditions inside South Africa at a designated VFS Visa Facilitation Centre. VFS guidance says extensions must be lodged at least 60 calendar days before the current permit expires. Do not let the stamp run out while you “wait for an appointment.”
Keep digital and paper copies of every receipt. After approval, your passport endorsement or visa sticker is the status landlords, employers, and banks will read. Banking next: Open a bank account.
What should you plan before you arrive?
SAQA evaluations and police certificates can take weeks. Start them before you resign or ship furniture. English works at many VFS desks in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban, yet original civil documents may still need sworn translation into an official South African language. Employer HR or an immigration practitioner helps when your Critical Skills job title must map cleanly onto the published list.
Daily life while papers process still runs on suburb cafés and outdoor plans: Social life and Making friends.
Common misconceptions
A job offer email is not a work visa. Critical Skills and general work files still need the full DHA and VFS pack, including SAQA where foreign qualifications are involved.
Visitor status also does not quietly become residence. Working on a tourist or ordinary visitor stamp creates immigration risk even if a future employer promise exists.
Summary
Choose a temporary residence category that matches work, study, family, or retirement, then lodge DHA-1738 through VFS or a South African mission with the medical, police, and category-specific proofs the checklist names.
Diary the 60-day extension window early, and treat the endorsed visa as the unlock for payroll and banking rather than a souvenir stamp.
