Can you live in Vietnam with English in 2026?

English is most useful in foreign-owned and internationally focused companies in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. Technology teams, regional offices, universities, tourism businesses, and international schools may use it for meetings and written work. Da Nang has a smaller English-facing network around technology, tourism, hospitality, and services for foreign residents.

Private hospitals and international clinics in these three cities often provide an English booking route or interpreter support. That does not mean every receptionist, laboratory, pharmacy, or ambulance crew will use English. Save the Vietnamese name of any medicine, allergy, address, and emergency contact before you need care.

Tourist hotels, airline counters, central cafés, and larger shopping centres are easier than a wet market or a neighbourhood repair shop. The Country To Live English indicator gives a broad country-level signal, but your actual street and workplace matter more.

Housing exposes the gap quickly. A rental agent may speak English, while the owner, building guard, cleaner, utility technician, and internet installer do not. Your host must handle tạm trú (the required temporary residence registration for a foreign guest). If an address problem reaches a phường (an urban ward), bring a Vietnamese-speaking person; Vietnam removed district-level local government in 2025, so old district names are now familiar area labels rather than the current administrative level.

Vietnamese matters at local clinics, markets, motorbike repair shops, public schools, and parent groups. It matters more in smaller cities and industrial locations where a foreign-facing service layer is thin. Even in central Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, a translated address and a phone call from a Vietnamese speaker can solve a delivery or building problem faster than repeated English.

Use translation tools for menus, short messages, and photographed notices. Use a human interpreter for a medical decision, employment contract, police matter, school agreement, or disputed lease. Machine translation can miss who must act, when payment is due, or whether a sentence is polite or firm.

In week one, learn your full address, phone number, numbers, prices, food needs, and transport phrases in the accent you hear at home. In week two, practise building access, deliveries, repairs, and landlord messages. Week three should cover symptoms, allergies, pharmacy questions, and one trusted clinic route. In week four, add workplace greetings and xưng hô (Vietnam's relationship-based system of address and pronouns), because choosing how to call a colleague or older neighbour affects the tone of the exchange.

Do not wait for perfect tones. Ask a Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or Da Nang teacher to record the exact phrases your household needs, then practise them with the guard, market seller, and driver you actually meet.
