Can you live in Hungary with English in 2026?

Budapest concentrates English-friendly multinational offices, shared-services centres, startups, embassies, and a large young urban workforce. Districts such as District V around Belváros, District VI around Nagymező utca, and District VII around the ruin-bar strip feel easier than outer panelház (prefabricated apartment block) neighbourhoods where older generations and building notices stay Hungarian-first. English also carries you through much of the expat layer: Facebook groups, Meetup nights, InterNations events, language exchanges, and American Corner programmes in Debrecen. That helps the first months, but it does not rewrite every kormányablak form, every TAJ desk question, or every stairwell notice into English. Community texture sits in Expat community in Hungary.

Kormányablak one-stop counters, many OIF and Enter Hungary steps, NAV tax registration, public clinic receptions, and municipal address cards still lean Hungarian-first. Some staff switch languages; many do not. Lease contracts, utility letters, and school or preschool portals are often Hungarian even when a landlord or teacher can chat in English at the door.

Hungarian is not a Slavic neighbour language. German or Slovak fluency helps less here than movers sometimes expect after living elsewhere in Central Europe.

English-only roles exist in tech, shared services, consulting, tourism, and selected international firms, especially in Budapest and parts of Debrecen. Domestic retail, public administration, healthcare, and many local companies still hire for Hungarian. Work detail: Hungarian for work.

Long-stay permanent residence for many third-country applicants now also asks for a Hungarian cultural knowledge exam written in Hungarian in Budapest, which café English does not replace.
