A Korean branch does more than inspect a passport. It must identify you, understand why you need the account, and decide which payment, transfer, and remote-banking functions fit the evidence.
What should you take to the branch?
Woori Bank accepts a passport or Residence Card as real-name identification and says extra documents may be required. The Residence Card is the identity card issued after qualifying foreigner registration. Take both if you opened with a passport and later received the card.
Prepare your Korean address and phone number, immigration status, employment or school evidence, expected account use, and source of funds. A contract, certificate of employment, payslip, utility bill, lease, or student certificate can connect the account to salary, rent, bills, or study. Declare every country of tax residence and the relevant foreign tax number when requested under FATCA and CRS, the US and international tax-account reporting systems.
Romanised names must match across passport, Residence Card, employer payroll, phone subscription, and bank record. Ask the branch to store the name correctly before it issues a card or mobile-banking login.
Why might the first account have limits?
Korean banks may start a new customer with a han-do jehan gyejwa, a transaction-limit bank account, while they assess transaction purpose and financial-crime risk. This is not a special visa and not proof that the customer did anything wrong.
Ask for the written cash, ATM, transfer, and electronic-banking limits. Later, bring the exact evidence the bank requested, such as recurring payroll, a lease and rent transfer, utility bills, or business-purpose records. The bank decides whether that evidence supports review; a Residence Card alone does not guarantee removal.
Branch and bank practices differ. A foreign-customer branch may handle document translation and manual identity checks better than an app, but it still applies the bank's compliance rules.
Which account and services should you request?
A KRW account holds Korean won for salary, rent, cards, and domestic transfers. A foreign-currency account holds supported currencies and has separate conversion and transfer terms. Ask whether you need one or both, and compare exchange margins rather than assuming a foreign-currency account avoids conversion costs.
Request a debit card, mobile and internet banking, transaction alerts, and an appropriate transfer limit during the visit. Credit cards and handset finance are separate credit decisions. Mobile setup may require a Korean number registered under the same foreigner registration number and name.
Before a Residence Card is issued, some banks can open a narrower passport-based account. Woori's guidance specifically tells a customer to return with passport and new card later. Product access, remote banking, and transaction limits may remain restricted, so confirm the branch's current passport-only route before moving money.
How do transfers and remittances differ?
Domestic transfer permission does not settle foreign-exchange reporting. For overseas remittance, the bank can ask about residency, destination, transaction purpose, and source of funds, and may require a designated foreign-exchange bank or supporting documents. Financial Supervisory Service guidance says some payment methods and capital transactions require a bank or Bank of Korea report.
Do not freeze one headline remittance threshold into your moving plan. Give the branch the amount and purpose and ask for the current document route before sending. Never lend the account, card, or phone authentication to another person.
Common misconceptions
A Residence Card does not force a bank to approve unrestricted mobile banking, credit, or high transfers. Identity, purpose, tax reporting, and source-of-funds checks remain separate.
A bank account also does not create Korean immigration status or work permission. It only provides the services in the signed account agreement.
Summary
Take matched identity, Korean contact, tax-residence, status, and transaction-purpose evidence to a branch. Get every initial restriction in writing.
Use documented salary, rent, or bill activity for any later limit review, and treat foreign remittance as a separate compliance process.
