How can migrants learn Swedish in Sweden in 2026?

SFI (Swedish for Immigrants) is municipal adult education that teaches basic Swedish and some practical society content. Skolverket, the Swedish National Agency for Education, sets the national rules; your hemkommun (home municipality) must offer the course to people who have the right to take it.

You are normally entitled to SFI from 1 July of the year you turn 16 if you lack basic Swedish and you are, or will be, registered in the Swedish population register. That registration is where you get a personnummer (personal identity number). Contact the municipality where you are folkbokförd (registered as resident). Search the municipal site for vuxenutbildning (adult education) or SFI and apply there.

The municipality maps your starting level and writes an individuell studieplan (individual study plan). You can study full-time or part-time and combine SFI with work or other Komvux (municipal adult education) courses. Arbetsförmedlingen can steer eligible jobseekers toward yrkesvenska (occupational Swedish) tied to a trade. That path is useful when you already know the job and need the workplace vocabulary.

Libraries and municipalities host språkcafé (language café) sessions where you speak Swedish with volunteers. Sports clubs, parent groups, and workplace fika give repeated exposure if you refuse the English escape hatch.

In Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö you can live almost entirely in English, so immersion is a choice. Use Swedish for one recurring weekly task: booking a haircut by phone, reading one Skatteverket letter with a dictionary, or describing a repair to a neighbour.

Apps and online drills help vocabulary between lessons. They do not replace placement, teacher feedback, or the speaking hours you need for real appointments.
