Tianmu, in Taipei's northern Shilin and Beitou area, is the historic American and Japanese family belt. Most skilled Americans arrive through the Employment Gold Card, which is not tied to one employer and lets holders live anywhere, though the community still clusters in Taipei. Sort residence early and line up health insurance and a bank account. English carries you through tech offices and central Taipei, but Mandarin still improves daily errands, older landlords, and government counters.

Americans who arrive only for a contract should decide early whether they want a nationality bubble or mixed local-and-expat ties. Both exist here, and they lead to very different second years: making friends.
