Extending your Japanese stay is an Immigration Services Agency (ISA) product, not a municipal stamp. You keep the same status of residence and ask for more time. Changing Engineer/Specialist to Spouse, or Student to work, is a different file: Change status of residence.
When and where do you apply?
File before your period of stay ends. Official guidance for people with six months or more usually opens applications from about three months before expiry; special cases such as hospital stays can allow earlier filing if the bureau agrees. Use the Regional Immigration Services Bureau that covers your address, or the ISA online residence application system when you qualify.
Online filing typically needs a My Number Card with a valid electronic certificate and a MyNaPortal account. Permission fees commonly sit at JPY 6,000 for counter filing and JPY 5,500 online, paid as directed when permission is granted. Processing often runs roughly two weeks to one month, but peaks stretch that window.
What documents usually appear?
Expect the application form for your status, passport, residence card, photo, and evidence that you still do the activity your status allows: employment certificate and tax documents for workers, enrollment papers for students, spouse evidence for family statuses. Name spellings must match the residence card and municipal address: Register address.
If you travel while an extension is pending, read re-entry rules carefully: Re-entry permit. Keep banks and employers updated when the new card arrives: Paperwork after moving.
Common misconceptions
Assuming a tourist landing can be “extended” into a work year fails. Extension keeps your current status; it does not invent a new one.
Assuming you can apply the week after expiry also fails. Late filings create overstay risk even when you meant to renew.
Summary
Apply within the official window with status-specific evidence, prefer online filing only when your My Number Card certificates work, and treat extension as separate from a status change. Do not let the residence card expire while the bureau is still deciding.
